As part of its environmental transformation strategy, Misurata Free Zone (MFZ) is implementing solar energy and emission management projects, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability and its vision of becoming a green port.
Strategic Partnerships for Environmental Solutions
In a pioneering step for Libya and North Africa, MFZ signed an investment agreement with CDT Germany, a leading provider of environmental solutions for the maritime industry. The agreement includes establishing an integrated facility to collect and treat ship emissions, making MFZ the first port in the region to practically implement International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental standards.
Investing in Renewable Energy
MFZ also reached a preliminary agreement with Penta, a U.S.-managed company specializing in solar energy projects, to build a solar power station inside the Free Zone. The project will accelerate the transition toward clean energy while enhancing the port’s role as a “green port.”
This initiative builds on existing efforts, such as the installation of solar-powered lighting within the port, further reducing energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions.
Receiving the First Eco-Friendly Vessel
As part of its roadmap toward cleaner shipping, MFZ recently welcomed its first LNG-powered vessel arriving from Genoa, Italy. This milestone demonstrates the port’s commitment to adopting cleaner fuels as a transitional step toward more sustainable alternatives such as green hydrogen and ammonia, in line with IMO targets to cut emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Supporting Local Initiatives
Beyond international partnerships, MFZ continues to support local initiatives and actively participates in renewable energy conferences, reflecting its responsibility to promote a culture of sustainability within Libya and beyond.
A Vision for Regional Leadership
Through these integrated initiatives, Misurata Free Zone is advancing confidently toward becoming a competitive green port at both the regional and global levels, fully aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on clean energy and climate action.
